about me

let’s get to know each other

My name is Mariel Olivo, and I just graduated from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse, NY. I majored in Graphic design, with dual minors in English & Textual Studies and Spanish Language, Literature & Culture. I’m looking for a job in design, and have currently had experience in magazine layout, product branding, poster design, web design, and public relations (among other things).

To date, my most rewarding experience has been working as Art Director of Syracuse University’s longest-running general interest publication, Equal Time Magazine. I started at Equal Time my freshman year writing blurbs, then became Assistant Art Director, and eventually stepped up as Art Director at the beginning of my junior year. It’s been extremely rewarding to work my way up. I’ve gotten to know the magazine very well, and have learned how to balance the creative aspects of design with the importance of good communication and coordination between art and editorial staff, and how to effectively meet deadlines.

Outside of the design world, I’ve lived in Brooklyn my entire life, and am a big fan of Food Network, my iPod (and all the wonderful treasures it contains), London, mashed potatoes, color theory, the lasso tool, Print magazine, Russian literature, pizza (New York style, naturally), my dog Ollie, a good laugh, and Google Reader.
